Millie Edmonds, is a Year 10 student at New England Girls’ School. Millie is one of a small team of girls who participate in Australia’s first all girls’ Campdrafting Academy. “I got my first pony when I was two years old,” said Millie. “I have always loved horses and so NEGS was the only school of choice for me.
“When I first started, the Equestrian Centre was focused on the Olympic disciplines, however in the last couple of years it has diversified into Polocrosse, Campdrafting and Cutting . “I am a member of the NEGS Campdraft and Cutting team and I love it.
We train two times a week in the arenas and work the cow cutter with Rob Newsome, Jock Weston and Tom Armitage as our Campdraft coaches. “Grant Quigley teaches us Cutting and horsemanship. I am also studying Equiskills as part of my curriculum subjects where we learn everything about horses. “So far this year we’ve had girls from the NEGS Campdraft team compete in the Charlie Maher Memorial Young Guns at Landmark in January, the ABCRA National Finals in Tamworth, the Bendemeer and Armidale Campdrafts. Year 11 student Holly Coulthard had great success at the ABCRA national finals held in Tamworth, winning round one with an 88, placing 5th in round three with an 86, placing her second in the overall aggregate. Laura Hardie won the
Bendemeer Juvenile draft, with an awesome run on Lenas Conman scoring a massive 91!
On February 13 and 14, Karl and Felicity Burton from Diamond K Performance Horses travelled down to NEGS to give a school on Campdrafting and challenging. Around 20 people attended the clinic and we all had a great time and learnt so much. Felicity was giving instruction on patterns and dry work and Karl was focussing on Campdrafting and we got to chase cattle which was great
fun. Members of the NEGS Campdraft Team will be attending the Coonamble Challenge on 18th, 19th and 20th of March and I’m sure the girls will be putting Karl and Felicity’s advice to good use at these events. We will also have girls going to Geurie Golden Bit, Quirindi, Coolah drafts coming up in March. Until next time – out and round ‘em!

Students of the NEGS Campdraft Academy have access to an outstanding private school education and boarding experience, while keeping their horses on campus and
having access to regular training by renowned Campdrafting clinicians.
In 2015, NEGS launched its hugely successful Cutting and Polocrosse Academy programs that have attracted some of Australia’s best up-and-coming junior riders. The NEGS’ Polocrosse Team won the prestigious Polocrosse Trophy at the North West Horse Expo this year – the first time it has been won by another school in nine years – and a number of the team’s riders have been selected to play for NSW and Australia. NEGS recognises that Campdrafting is Australia’s fastest growing equestrian sport and that the school is in a excellent position to take advantage of this growth and offer a unique opportunity to young Campdrafting enthusiasts from around Australia.
“The NEGS training programs are seeing excellent results with girls in all disciplines meeting or exceeding their training and competitive goals,” said a spokesperson for NEGS Equestrian. “The introduction of the academy programs in 2015 has allowed us to build more capacity in our riders using specialist coaches in structured holistic programs.
“We have long seen a need to develop a Campdrafting training program to cater for the growing number of young riders who are showing both an interest and aptitude in what is Australia’s fastest growing equestrian sport.
“We hear all the time from parents that “they wish these programs had been available when they were at school. “Most seem to think that they would have been better students if they had what is on offer today at NEGS.”
Not only is NEGS renowned as one of Australia’s premier equestrian schools, it also offers a rigorous academic program and a hugely innovative and respected Wellbeing Program.
